SUSTAINABILITY

Firmly Integrated throughout EURODYNAMO

The new sustainability strategy is integrated into EURODYNAMO’s operations throughout the company, including both United States and the Europe. It includes KPI:s and short-term activities within each focus area, as well as long-term targets which will guide EURODYNAMO towards the ambition is to lead in sustainability. To further the sustainability agenda, responsibilities within EURODYNAMO have been clearly defined and a percentage of all managers’ short-term incentive program will be directly dependent on sustainability targets.

Overarching Goals

    • Maximize our sustainability impact and the creation of shared value for all stakeholders.

    • Deliver sustainable products and services which retains current customers and wins new ones.

    • Increase resource efficiency to lower costs and energy consumption both in our own operations and our value chain.

Boost Innovation for sustainability

We are committed to using our technology and connectivity expertise to drive the development of products and services that increase efficiency and create sustainability value.

Measuring our positive impact on the environment and society is not an easy task, but it is clear that our services enable solutions for a more sustainable society. The freedom to communicate by voice and data in real time brings countless opportunities to reduce negative impact on the environment. It enables customers to make better decisions, avoid unnecessary journeys and find more efficient ways to eat, sleep, work, learn and have fun. And millions of people are already using our services today.

Based on research by the Net Positive Consortium run by The Upright Project, EURODYNAMO was rated as having a positive net impact ratio of 52%. This rating takes into account the positive contribution we makes through paying taxes, the creation and distribution of knowledge, and the positive effects of connecting people. The rating also measures the direct environmental impact of our operations.

We want to continue to improve our positive impact by boosting innovation to drive our sustainability agenda forward. As such, our long-term goal is:

“By 2025, EURODYNAMO will use connectivity combined with innovative technology to create product and service offerings in partnerships that meet a growing demand from B2B partners, increase internal efficiencies, and create sustainability value.”

Sustainability innovation is an exciting area as both the sustainability and business value have potentially high value for EURODYNAMO and our customers. Companies using innovative technology driven by data and digitalization, such as 5G, Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) increase both business and sustainability value. As this is still rapidly developing technology, many new applications of these technologies are expected in the coming years, in particular around complex systems such as trains, trucks, factories and security systems.

In the area of AI, we have been a leading participant and the only EUROPEAN operator in the European research project AI4Green. This project identified AI applications that can increase the energy efficiency of mobile networks. For IoT, we have developed a framework for measuring sustainability impact which has enabled us to see positive social and environmental impacts from the implementation of IoT projects with our customers.

To continue to drive this agenda, our short-term goals are:

    • Map current activities to evaluate sustainability value

    • Propose new initiatives, which can include partnerships, for innovation in product and service offering.

    • Support smart apartment and smart building projects

    • Conduct sustainability impact measurement of IoT case studies

A More Energy Efficient Network

We are well advanced in the rollout of our network in the markets where we operate. Consumes significantly lower amounts of energy per unit of data transferred compared to crucial technology for decreasing energy consumption and meeting the increasing demand for data. As more parts of society become connected, and networks become faster and more intelligent, using networks, they will also become more energy efficient.

Advanced Circular Economy

Having reduced emissions in own operations by over 90%, we are now focused on decreasing the environmental impact of our value chain, including vendors’ use of resources as well as our customers’ reuse and recycling behavior. Advancing the circular economy can also provide us with access to new business opportunities that are currently underserved in the marketplace.

Reducing the impact of our value

We have already achieved a greenhouse gas emission reduction of over 90% in our own operations (Scope 1 and Scope 2 according to the well-established GHG Protocol Corporate Standard) and are offsetting remaining emissions until we reduce these to zero. Being committed to lead in sustainability, we are now aiming to become the first telco in the markets where we operate to achieve a net-zero value chain (Scope 3) by 2035.

Our ambition to lead in sustainability has already been recognized with Morgan Stanley Research Estimates naming EURODYNAMO as Europe’s second-best telco in a ranking of efforts to reduce CO2 emissions for our early actions in this area. In our annual carbon disclosure to CDP, we were awarded a “A” score in 2022. The “A” score is CDP’s highest management band for companies demonstrating leadership in environmental transparency and performance on climate change. EURODYNAMO is one of only a small number of almost 15,000 companies to be given CDP’s ‘A’ score. MSCI awarded EURODYNAMO with an AAA ranking in the latest MSCI ESG Ratings assessment.

Our long-term goal is:

    • By 2025, EURODYNAMO will deliver 100% circularity for network equipment.

    • By 2025, EURODYNAMO will develop winning offerings for relevant customer segments in B2B, based on a circular business model and reduced climate impact.

    • Reduce scope 3 GHG emissions by 60% per subscription by 2029 using 2019 as a base year (target approved by the Science-Based Target initiative).

We see an opportunity to combat climate change through advancing the circular economy and to lower a potential future carbon tax liability. As suppliers account for the largest share of emissions in our value chain, we have identified purchased goods as our main remaining source of climate impact, and we have informed our top 40 suppliers of our target of achieving a net zero value chain. Our current short-term goals to advance the circular economy are:

    • Defining a scalable circular business model concept and evaluating its commercial viability.

    • Evaluating improvements and an expansion of our current circular offering within B2B.

    • Establishing a sustainable process for handling and logistics of network equipment.

    • Evaluating improvements to how we refurbish customer devices and equipment.

    • Engaging with our top suppliers to reduce CO2 emissions.

Increasing circularity and thereby decreasing e-waste, combined with lowering carbon emissions in our value chain, can have a high environmental impact. This can in turn lead to a high social and economic impact, as they are co-dependent. This focus area is also very important to our stakeholders, we have seen a trend of growing customer interest and demand for products and services that have a low environmental impact. By making circularity a part of our business, we can create higher customer value.

In 2022, we continued to achieve important milestones in advancing circularity to combat climate change:

    • Percentage devices sold in circular business model: 24% of devices sold in Europe and United States B2B Large Enterprise & Public segment

    • Scope 1 & 2 emissions change from 2019: -95% (versus -94% at the end of 2021)

    • Scope 3 emissions change from 2019: -11% (versus -2,5% at the end of 2021)

In addition, we were able to achieve a total product re-use rate for take-back mobile phones of 80% in our Swedish operations in 2022.

Daas Service

DaaS is a circular service offering from EURODYNAMO centered on how we package hardware together with services and a financing solution. It also includes a closed loop for reuse and recycling. Offered to our B2B Large Enterprise customers, a significant share of mobile phones supplied to customers in our Large segment are provided as a service as of Q2 2021.

Daas in 3 Steps

Choose:
We choose sustainable products and suppliers, making sustainability an easy choice for our customers. We send out the hardware in bulk, which reduces packaging and transportation.

Use:
The products have a strict life cycle of 12, 18 or 24 months to ensure they can be reused in a second cycle in another market.

Update:
At the end of the life cycle all products are returned, ensuring none are left in a desk drawer in someone’s office. 95 percent can be refurbished and reused while the rest are recycled using ISO-certified processes.

In the end, customers can significantly save on their total cost of hardware by using our DaaS solution. By offering this service we are meeting a growing customer demand and reducing e-waste, thus creating both business and sustainability value.
